That elusive Dodo!

If you know that dodos originated from the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius, which was ruled under Dutch settlement from 1598 to 1710 (and named after prince Maurice of Nassau) - it is not surprising that some dodos occasionally ended up in Holland. They were transported there by trade vessels as living specimens, to be studied by ornithologists, or sold on to wealthy collectors of curiosities.

However, once arrived, a few clever dodos managed to break free from captivity, and thus escaped not only an uncertain fate - but also the extinction of their whole species! (Apparently, the last sighting of a live dodo on Mauritius was in 1662.)
Ever since their escape these brave, adventurous dodos (and eventually, their descendants) have been into hiding at a secret location somewhere in Holland, where they have successfully built a safe existence 😊⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

Nowadays, a handful of dodo youngsters dream of exploring more of the world and settling down in a new place to build a nest of their own - and that is where our "Vagabond Strays" shelter comes into play!
This afternoon we welcomed dodo cousins Philemon and Phinneas (left) with a nice cup of tea and a Bundt cake, and we toasted to the beginning of their voyage towards a forever home 💕
We hope to help them make their dream come true on the next adoption day on May 1st!
